When I’m not working or on set, I try to spend as much time as I can outside. I’ve always been a very outdoorsy person and I take any chance I have to connect with nature. Now that I’m a mom, I still love being outside and sharing that with my little boy. At first, I thought it would be challenging to think of adventures that will be kid-friendly and fun for the whole family, but it wound up being so much easier than I thought. We’ve made our home in Hawaii and there is endless opportunity there to explore, whether it’s swimming, hiking, boating or fishing. Even though he’s a little too young for it now, I’m definitely going to teach my son how to fish as soon as he’s old enough. My three reasons why I’ll teach my kid to fish are:

1. ESCAPE THE INDOORS

Being on the water is truly a passion of mine - my husband and I named our son Ocean, so that says it all. We introduced him to the ocean when he was just two weeks old and he absolutely loved it. As he grows up, we’re excited to take him along on more trips and teach him how to fish. We want him to be confident and not afraid to get dirty, play hard and burn off a little bit of that toddler energy!

2. THAT FIRST BITE

Feeling that first tug on the line is so exciting, you remember in that second why you’re out there waiting for that first bite. Nothing compares to reeling in the big one though – if you get the opportunity to reel in a big fish, you’ll see it’s one of the coolest possible feelings. The biggest fish I’ve ever caught was a 30-lb blackfin tuna and I think that was one of my proudest moments. I want Ocean to experience the satisfaction that comes with hard work – and the thrill of a catch, of course!

3. CONNECT WITH FAMILY

Growing up, my sisters and I frequently went fishing with my dad, grandma and grandpa. It was something we did as a family and I have such wonderful memories of that time in my life. I can’t wait for Ocean to grow up and join in the tradition. I hope he continues to enjoy being on the water and eventually, fishing, because it’s so much fun and it’s something we’ll always be able to do together.
