Parks and Recreation Month (July 2009) pulls communities together to volunteer, get involved in outdoor activities, celebrate the joy of outdoor spaces and recognize the vital contributions of employees and volunteers in public parks and recreational facilities. National Marina Day (August 8, 2009) focuses specifically on two central themes: the important role marinas play as safe, family-friendly gateways to boating and the invaluable service marina operators and owners perform as stewards of the environment. Learn more about this event and how you can get involved.

National Public Lands Day (September 26, 2009) Public lands offer a variety of fishing and boating opportunities. National Public Lands Day is the nation’s largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the public lands Americans enjoy. In 2007, 110,000 volunteers built trails and bridges, planted trees and plants, and removed trash and invasive plants.

Take Pride in America is a national partnership established by the U.S. Department of the Interior that aims to engage, support and recognize volunteers who work to improve our public parks, forests, grasslands, wildlife refuges, cultural and historical sites, local playgrounds, and other recreation areas. Together we protect and enhance the special legacy all Americans share—our public lands that cover more than one in every three acres across the nation.

National Safe Boating Week is part of the North American Safe Boating Campaign, which aims to raise awareness of safe boating practices and ensure that every person on a boat is wearing a life jacket. Sponsored by the National Safe Boating Council, the U.S. Coast Guard and many other boating safety partners, the campaign offers educational resources, event planning and promotional materials.

American Rivers: River Action Day American Rivers is a conservation organization dedicated to protecting and restoring healthy natural rivers and the variety of life they sustain for people, fish and wildlife. They deliver innovative solutions to improve river health, raise awareness among decision-makers and the public, and serve and mobilize the river conservation movement.

National Get Outdoors Day offers events held across the nation to help all Americans - especially American families with children - discover opportunities for healthy fun. National Get Outdoors Day sites will be open to the the general public, with a special outreach to local community segments that currently benefit less from the use of public lands and waters. Each National Get Outdoors Day event has a mix of information centers and "active fun" areas - places where guests, and especially kids, can use a fishing pole, go geocaching, help pitch a tent and more.
