you do not put bait on crankbaits or top water baits. it is common to put a bait like a minnow etc on a jig. most lure boxes have directions on how to use them and i know there is a lot of info on this site to help.

Ben, Tom is right, no other bait is needed. Each of these lures will attract fish based on their appearance and how they move through the water so practice different retrieves so you know how they "swim" in the water. Have fun.

It may be a good idea to find out what kind of fish live in the area you are planning to fish and buy lures to match the species. Maybe a local bait and tackle place could offer some local advice. Good luck!

Ben,
I recently got back into fishing again, and I can tell you from experience. Go to your Father-in-law and ask questions. Trust me, it will benefit you all the way around. Most fishermen love to help others in the quest to fish! I'll even bet you that he learned a lot of what he knows from simply asking questions from someone who already knows! Fish On!

First I'd like to start by apologizing if I have any stupid and obvious questions.
I used to fish a little when I was young but honestly was never really any good at it. I did however enjoy every second of it even if I didn't catch anything.
I recently started kayaking and absolutely love it. I live really close to Lake Allatoona in metro Atlanta, GA and have always thought it was a shame I wasn't on the water more. Since I'm now kayaking I've fixed that problem and am on the water about 4 times a week. Since I’m out there now I've wanted to start fishing again while I go out on my kayaking trips.
My father-in-law is also a big fisherman and goes out all the time. I have questions really on just how to get started. The problem is I feel slightly embarrassed to ask him my questions since I know so little.
My first question is that I have read about some lures that work well for the fish in Allatoona but I’m not sure how to use those lures. I’m going to listed what I've been told and I hope it makes sense: Sammy, Rapala Shad Rap # 5, Zara Spook Jr., Pop R top water lure.
I've been able to look up most of those on Bass Pro Shop and have noticed that those lures all look like little fish so I’m wondering if you still put some type of bait on the lures or not.
I suppose that’s all of my questions for now, but really I don't even know what to ask yet. So any other advice that any more experienced fishermen might have would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ben
