I've been taking my kids fishing since they were very young. In fact I used to push my middle daughters stroller along the bank of a local stream while her mother and I took turns casting for trout. On one such trip, my wife and I had not caught a thing all day, when my daughter started fussing in her stroller so I handed her my pole. While ammusing herself with the reel handle a small trout took the bait and she caught her first fish, before she was even a year old. It's treasured moments like these that last a lifetime.

You definitely gotta start em young. There is a local Sportsman club near me and they put about 5000 trout in it for kids under 15 to fish. Parents are allowed to help their kids and teach them the ropes. I would suggest finding a place like this. If you can get them to catch a few fish in as little amount of time as possible it will spark an enthusiastic interest and then gradually move to different places that may not produce as many fish but it will help them learn and appreciate nature and family time.

Get her a handheld bass fishing game, then take her out on the boat with you while you fish. There's a good chance that eventually she would rather do the real thing than just doing it in a game. Even if she doesn't, at least you are both together and spending quality time, both of you doing what you love.

I have taken many small kids fishing and the most important thing is to take them where they can catch fish like fast. lol.........Bassmaster is right, try getting them bass fishing game for their video game. I have two daughters 14 and 16 and they both love to fish. I think taking them when they were young to where they could catch a lot of fish regardless weather they are trash fish or game fish just so they catch a lot in a short time. Both my girls live for fishing.

I have a two year old little boy and he absolutely loves going fishing. everytime i have a fishing trip planned, i get all my gear and lay out my rod set-ups for the next day while sitting in the living room floor. by being where he could see me, he had taken an immediate interest in what i was doing. soon after i couldn't get him off of me in order to work on my set-ups, i went through my tackle box and removed the hooks from about 10 lures that i did not really use anymore. i put the lures in an extra small tackle box i had lying around the house and made his day by letting him have his own fish. ever since that day, i make it a habit to take him to a small pond near the house each weekend and catch a hand full of perch with him. i hope this helps you out.

The key is to have fun.
some of the most fun i ever had with my dad was fishing.
teach every chanch you get and when they run out of whys you ask a few, and hear what the have to say.
some times when the fish are not biting and they want to throw rocks teach them to skip rocks.

There is some great advice here, it should be a topic printed in every fishing magazine! I have been introducing kids to fishing since I was one and when I went to college I took classmates! We brought along kites, frisbees, nets, what ever to keep them interested and by the water, (see Scott, PA and korny above) and to amuse their short attention spans. My brother does the same with his son and now I am teaching my grand daughters. Life is good!

Um hi. I'm new to fishing. I remember going with my father as a child, but haven't been in so many years. I want to take my 4 year old son fishing. I live in Summerville, SC and I will be honest I do not know anything about fishing. Does anyone know where a good place is to take a 4 year old fishing?? I learned last week how to put a worm on a hook! lol

Go for the Bluegill (Sunfish, Panfish) easy to catch. Can even use bread if the kids won't touch worms.

I found that my daughter has fun fishing for about 10 minutes...then she's bored. Bring lunch, and some fun stuff water-related to do...but as most of the above anglers say...DON'T PLAN ON FISHING MUCH YOURSELF!! The kids like when you watch them fish...and get excited when they catch something(even if it's smaller than a goldfish)...but when you do catch a lunker...I like to let her reel it in! TAKE PICTURES!!! =)
