I still have brass weights and beads left over from the late 80's when the carolina rig was in its hay day. don't use it much anymore. It works...but it a lot of work to put the rig together and there are a ton of other ways to fool the fish these days.

I think a Carolina rig still has its place. I use it for big smallmouth. Fishing a 6" lizard in pumpkin in off-color water I make long casts with a half ounce weight and work long points moving the lizard quickly through the areas I'm fishing. It's proved highly effective in catching smallmouth over 6 pounds. Another trick I learned some time ago for summertime smallies is to work a topwater prop bait quickly across the area your fishing first and then follow it with a Carolina-rigged plastic. The topwater calls the fish in while the Carolina rig is left to find the biters. Good fishing!
