Cody the fact that you and your kids enjoy the lake with out catching any thing tells me you know more about fishing then some, But your right Catching fish makes the experience much more enjoyable. Lake Whitney offers top notch angling for striped bass, (which you had the pleasure In catching) white bass, smallmouth bass and giant Blue cat, But this lake also holds largemouth, channel and flathead cat, crappie and sunfish. Spoons Are still a good lure to use.. picking the right lure depends on the fish you want to catch and the depth your fishing. I do have some questions for you. 1. What is your rod and reel set up and line test? 2. do you boat fish Or bank fish ? 3. what do you want to catch? With the answers to the question I can better help you reach you goal of catching fish.

www.tpwd.state.tx.us/fishboat/... here is a web site you can look at it has a good over look of the lake and I think you will find it informative and very helpful, now with lures you can use jigs, lipless crankbait or a spinner bait. My personal favorite is the chatter bait made by Z man the chatter stick is my all time fav. I hope this helps.

Sorry it took a while to respond to your question anderson, as for my rod and reel set up its nothing special, Shakespeere firebird, open face wheel combo i got from wal mart. The test on the line is 10lbs. We usually bank fish unless we get lucky enough that a friend of mine comes down with his boat.

If you have any Questions Please ask and i will help you any way I can. I hope that you and your family had a good 4th of July celebration...

Wow Cody, so much to look forward too when your new to fishing. You and your kids have the most fundamental part down already and thats enjoying it, so the rest will be just as fun. Using minnows hooked through the lips and a bobber if you just want to try for pan fish like crappies and blue gills, occationally other fish get caught too, but that is a fun way to spend a day with the kids. They also make for a fantastic fish fry and the experience the kids get from being able to eat what they catch is priceless. If it's artificial bait your after try to find out what kinds of food sources are found naturally in the lake you fish and match what they eat. A lot of larger lakes with strippers have a good shad population so I wouldn't be surprised if something like strike kings swim baits in shad colors would work nice for some fun striper fishing. Now if it's cats your after, Be sure to not fish with a tight line. That means watching the line for movement and using a slip weight that allows the line to move freely while still holding it down on the bottom is what I use. Bait choice for cats I use is mostly small bluegills with a cut in the tail so the blood trial attracts big cats, They naturally eat smaller panfish when they're a natural food source and cat fish can open thier mouth bigger than most fish so eating them is easy for them. Some areas have laws preventing using cut baits so be sure to check your local laws about live baits and or ask your local bait shop for info about live bait. They almost always know much more than just the cost of bait. Again WOW you are in for so many new experiences to enjoy with your children and I wish you all the best. Take a lot of pics because they grow up fast and will someday be taking out their kids passing on what you gave them tomorrow. Keep us all posted on how it all goes. Good luck and happy fishing.

Just to keep everyone posted on whats going on... It's simply too hot to fish here. Until today ( which the temp is in the low 90's due to a cool front) 23 out of the last 25 days have hit triple digit temperatures mostly of 105+ in my immediate area. Please correct me if I'm wrong but don't fish dive deeper to keep cool making it even harder to fish off the bank in temps like this?

At 34 yrs old I am very new to fishing and have no idea on what kind of lures/bait to use to catch any fish at all. Any help anyone can provide me would be very helpful. I live on Lake Whitney. Not real sure yet on what kinds of fish live in this lake or even how to find habitats of different types of fish. The only lure I have used is a spoon due to my lack of knowledge of this sport. I caught a 8 pound striper(maybe more didnt have any way to weigh it) on a spoon and its the only fish I have ever caught. My kids and I enjoy going to the lake to fish even if we don't catch anything which has been all the time. I would like to learn how to catch something to make our experience more enjoyable. Feel free to ask me any questions and I will try to answer them the best I can. Thanks for your help.
