Hotspot Description:
Little Storm is connected to Storm Lake, the 4th largest natural lake in Iowa. It flows into the "Big Storm" under a bridge (highway 110). It can be navigated by canoe or kayak, except in the spring when the water level is high.
There has been speculation to build a Nature Center near Little Storm as part of the AWASIS project. It would educate people in the on going dredging projects, wind turbin power in the area, lake restoration, controling fish (carp) populations, and general nature.
Frank Starr City park is located across from highway 110 which is one of Storm Lake's largest parks featuring: handicapped fishing dock, rock jetty good for fishing, paved paths, lighted lake/bike path, sand volleyball court, bathrooms, playground equipment, shelter houses, picinic areas, BBQ grills, green space and parking.
There is a small boat access perfect for canoes, small row boats, or kayaks. It also has a rustic nature trail just east of the boat access. It is known to showcase incoming pelicans, geese, several varieties of ducks, possum, garter snakes, rabbits, squirls, deer, beaver, skunks and my favorite; painted and snapping turtles.
Little Storm is known for it's shallow structure good for beaver dams, carp, and catfish. The Iowa DNR has plans to block the carp from entering Storm Lake with a netting/fence structure sometime in the spring of 2010. There are also plans to dredge Little Storm Lake with the help of federal funding, ie. Corps. of Engineering.Community Rating:

Hotspot Description:
Storm Lake is Iowa's 4th Largest Natural Lake with 3,097 Acres, three Lighthouses, three small islands, two Marinas, three campgrounds, two golf courses, two ice skating rinks, Lake/Bike path, and several public beaches. It is currently being dredged from April 1 until Nov. 1 on the east side of the lake. Be very careful of the dredge pipe, many lower units have been damaged because boaters do not stay clear of the lighted/marked bouys.
The Marinas offer excellent public boat access with the Lakeside Marina on the east side featuring: auto and dock boat fuel, campground, disc golf course, bike path access, ice cream, bait shop, boat repair/service, slip rental, beach and picinic areas. The newly built Iowa DNR Marina (late 2008) is on the west side featuring: dock boat fuel, bait shop, boat sales/repair/service, small shopping, slip rental, handicap fishing dock, and plenty of parking.
Camping features a public Sunrise Campground (newly revamped in 2007), private run Lakeside Marina Campground both located on the east side of the lake, and also a Boy Scout/Cub Scout campground on the north side next to the Buena Vista University Beach.
Family Fun attraction is on the north east side boasting a $30 million AWAYSIS project. Kings Pointe Resort is a community run Indoor/Outdoor Aquatic Center, Hotel, Restaurant, banquet rooms, fishing/boat docking, public beach, Lighthouse viewing tower, outdoor childrens playground, and lake/bike path.
Golf options are the public 9-hole course, Sunrise Course, remodeled (2007) located next to Kings Pointe. The 9-cage Disc Golf Course is down the road past Sunrise Campground.
