Looking ahead to the long weekend maybe it's time to consider a new tradition. Something you can start with a sibling, your family, some close friends or your associates. Maybe it's Thanksgiving morning, maybe it's the day after or sometime on the weekend where you and others get together for a few hours or a day's fishing. Headed into winter it might be the last chance you have to connect on the water before next spring. Better yet, it may be the perfect opportunity to celebrate the year's fishing and send it off in style with one final trip. In some parts of the country there's ample opportunity year around though you may need to bundle up in the northern tier states. Whatever you choose and wherever you are this week may be the perfect opportunity to create a lasting tradition that's part of your Thanksgiving celebration for years to come. Think about it and if you need some ideas on where to go check out the state-by-state info on this website. Happiest of Thanksgivings!

With prime time fishing and boating seasons winding down across the country now's a great time to get ready for next season. No doubt there's plenty to do like getting your rods cleaned up, removing old line off your reel, cleaning and oiling your reel(s), discarding rusty or worn hooks and getting your tackle organized. Boaters can begin making lists and tending to the various detail items. Nothing's better than to have everything ship-shape and ready to go when the sun comes out in the spring and there's fish to be caught. For some of you, now may be the calm before the storm when lakes freeze and attention turns to ice houses and augers. You'll want to get your gear ready and now's a great time to do it! You'll extend the life of your fishing and boating gear substantially by taking a little time to keep it clean, ready and maintained.

With halloween just behind us and winter not far away now is the time to winterize your boat. Some parts of the country have already had a good dumping of snow so you'd be well-advised, if you haven't already, to get your boat fully winterized before the first hard freeze. This is truly a case of "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" and we can't emphasize any stronger that waiting may result in thousands of dollars of damage to your boat. You'll find all you need right here on TakeMeFishing.org under the boating section, then go to "boating basics" and look under "storage and maintenance"... everything you need is there. Of course, stopping by your local boat dealer for tips and supplies is also good advice. Don't wait...even if you're in an area that doesn't typically freeze but you're storing your boat for the season --- you'll want to perform some important annual maintenance to assure the running performance of your boat next season. Again, you'll find all you need right here at TakeMeFishing.org under the storage and maintenance tab of "boating basics."

In some parts of the country the first whispers of winter are beginning to show with light snow flurries and plummeting temperatures. In other parts of the country fall is in full swing as leaves turn color and drop en masse to be swept, piled and taken away. The season's changing...fast...and you'll need to change with it if you're fishing. Fall brings some of the best fishing of the year as fish feed voraciously in preparation for winter. In those places where winter's beginning to set in you'll need to slow down and maybe adjust your schedule to fish just a couple hours at a whack. In other areas where it's prime time fall fishing you'll be open to enjoy all the regular methods of catching with no slow down. Wherever you are...enjoy it. Fall is a vivid reminder that things are changing and when they do you'll likely be relegated to shorter and fewer trips as you ready for next year's activities and plan accordingly. The adage, "make hay while the sun shines" was never so true as now --- enjoy it while it's here because soon winter will be in full force and you'll either be fishing through the ice, bundling up and floating a western river, plunking on a reservoir or maybe enjoying some inshore fishing in the gulf or southern California. Fortunately, wherever you are, there's always plenty of fishing opportunity...you just may have to look a little harder the next few months to find it.

Is it too early to winterize? Absolutely not! In fact, any time you're going to store your boat for an extended period of time, say longer than a couple of months, you should at least stabilize the fuel. Just because it's not freezing in your neck of the woods right now doesn't mean you should put off this most important maintenance feature. It's top of mind for me right now because I just serviced my boat even though I'll be using it this weekend. I changed lower unit lubricant, greased the steering, made sure my trailer hubs were lubed, added fuel stabilizer to my fuel, removed the props and lubed the prop shafts and checked my battery connections. After this trip I'll likely not be doing as much boating as I have been so I want to make sure everything's serviced properly before storing it. Regular and thorough maintenance is precisely why my boat stays in tip-top shape and why I get top dollar for it when I sell. It's a lesson hard-learned from others not as diligent. Faithfully maintaining my gear is the best way I know how to get assure a long and trouble-free relationship with my favorite fishing platform. You'll find plenty of useful boat maintenance information on this website under "boating"

There's no shortage of information that supports the fact that fishing in the fall delivers prime time opportunity. In the northeast bass are feeding heavily in preparation for winter. They're not alone. Brook trout move into shoal areas and strike with reckless abandon. Nearshore saltwater fisheries are teeming with opportunity as well. South to Florida, it's prime time as well both inland and offshore. The midwest and south enjoy similar late season opportunities for a variety of species with bass and walleye topping the list. In the west there's steelhead, trout, salmon and bass that are ready and ripe for the catching! No matter where you are in the country there's plenty of information resources to get you pointed in the right direction. Your department of fish and wildlife or DNR is happy to direct you to the best and brightest opportunities in your area. Of course, local fishing publications are a huge help as well. The fact is, there's still plenty of life left in this year's fishing and boating seasons. It's particularly interesting that each and every year fishing in the U.S. ends on a crescendo. Take advantage of the wealth of resources and opportunities that are available and end your fishing and boating season on a high note by getting out now.

If you haven't gone boating in the fall you're missing out on one of the most enchanting and memorable experiences in the outdoors. Whether it's by canoe or kayak, skiff or yacht, fall opens new and remarkable doors that can only be found this time of year. Surprisingly, in every corner of the country, pressure drops exponentially. Waters that were once teeming with boaters are vacant as parents and families attend to school and the long list of extracurriculars that occupy kids. Certainly, the colors are seasonally unique and vibrant which casts its own spell and makes each boat ride a little more pleasant. If you happen to have a rod and reel aboard, fishing's generally peaking this time of year as fish feed aggressively before the onset of winter. More than anything is the serenity. With fall comes a unique quiet and still that adds to the experience. If you haven't started boating...now's a good time to take your first trip. And whenever you boat --- be sure to wear your PFD (life vest).

Seasoned fishing enthusiasts and novices alike can all learn from a recent tournament win by one of the nation's leading bass pro's. His comment after the victory was that he "just went out and had fun fishing." He's worked hard to "have fun" when he goes out fishing. It's something he's practiced so that when tournament day comes he's mentally ready to ply his craft. Seems obvious enough but there's a strong lesson for everyone in that simple message. You can fish hard and have fun. You seasoned veterans of the sport can well remember when you've logged some incredible catches --- those days you were "in the groove" and couldn't miss. When you arrived back at the launch you were surprised to find most everyone else had struggled to get a bite! Remember how relaxed you were? How much fun you had? You were in the zone and everything was going right on every cast. Whether it's basketball, swimming or walking, staying loose is important, in fact, critical to peak performance. The same is true in fishing. Taking in your surroundings, making good decisions on where and how you're going to fish and then enjoying the entire process - the mechanics of the sport like casting, retrieving and presenting your bait to the fish. When you're in the zone you can sense where the fish are and why. Your equipment seems to work better. There's no frustration, only joy and fun on those particularly productive, fun fishing days that keep us all wanting for more. Like most things in fishing, it's a simple lesson but an important one. Have fun, relax and enjoy your day on the water...chances are you'll catch more fish!

Getting kids interested and involved in fishing fires lifetime memories and connects them to the outdoors in a way that no other recreational pursuit can. The lessons are many. Patience; safety; socializing; appreciating nature; learning about habitat, fish and water; spending time with family and friends; and appreciating the great outdoors. It certainly takes some effort on the part of adults and parents to get kids excited about going fishing --- but it's effort well-worth spending. There's a wonderful website that's been launched that can help with some of the lifting. www.exploretheblue.com is a useful, fun and informative website tailored to kids and filled with games and activities designed to pique kids interest in fishing. Of course, you'll have the pleasure of getting them to the water and taking them fishing. Your challenge will be to find that fishery that's a sure thing and provides fast action --- with kids, a little success goes a long ways toward fueling their passion to get out, go fishing and enjoy the outdoors.

It's remarkable how many people stop fishing and boating after Labor Day. These are anglers and boaters who waited patiently through late fall, the dead of winter and early spring for water and weather conditions to improve. Who can blame them? Yet, when some of the season's best fishing is opening up, the weather's still pleasant, clear and inviting and conditions for both fishing and boating are near optimum, tens of thousands throw in the towel and call it a season. Now is the time to pour it on...take full advantage of the changing season and enjoy the last couple months of premium fishing and boating opportunity. You'll find empty boat launches, plenty of elbow room and peak fishing waiting to be savored. If you're thinking about hanging it up for the year --- don't. You can build your trips around football games and other "to-do's" by taking shorter 1/2 day jaunts, but don't miss out on what is for most, the best the year has to offer. In many ways the season's just started...at least for those of us who know better and are spending our time on the water.
