Some of the year's best fishing is ahead! For most parts of the country this has been a great year to be an angler. Several records have been eclipsed, opportunities seemed limitless and fishing, by most standards, was outstanding! The last couple weeks of summer are ahead and then we roll into fall fishing. That magical time of year when most fish species throw caution to the wind and feed heavily in anticipation of winter. Topwater fishing is peaking as well. Whether it's a hopper for trout, buzz bait or chugger for bass, cigar bait for muskie and pike or a stick bait for speckled trout or snook, you can score on top right now. It's one of fishing's most electric moments when a fish blow's up on a topwater presentation. The season's far from over and hopefully your calendar reflects plenty more fishing and boating on the horizon. The best is yet to come!

With the long, Labor Day Weekend ahead, what are your plans to celebrate? Maybe this year you can introduce someone who's never fished to the sport of fishing? At TakeMeFishing.org we call this "Angler's Legacy" and it's one of the best ways we can all do something good for fish and fishing. As more people come into the sport their license purchases fuel fish and wildlife agencies across the country. This equates into more money for management, stocking, education and fisheries development which benefits all anglers. Also, new anglers need equipment and their equipment purchases also create fisheries revenue through excise taxes imposed on recreational fishing equipment. These revenues are divided among the 50 states based on license sales. The states that sell the most licenses get the most benefit. In sharing the sport of fishing with someone new you're not only opening a wonderful door to outdoor opportunities and recreation to that person but you're also providing a benefit to the sport you love. Good fishing and safe boating this long Labor Day Weekend!

Some of the best fishing of the year is right now and over the next two months. With the long Labor Day Weekend coming up have you set your plans to take advantage of peak season fishing? As I look around the country there's hot fishing in literally every corner of the nation and throughout the Heartland. You won't have to look long or hard to find exceptional prospects. One place to check is your state fish and wildlife website or better, pick-up the phone and get in contact with the area fish biologist...they know what's going on and can direct you to the best fishing opportunities in the area(s) you're interested in visiting. While they may not know what bait is best or when the fish are most active they will have an idea of fish populations, species, productivity and access. End your summer on a high note by getting out and wetting a line --- start your fall on the same note by discovering the best and brightest prospects your area has to offer.

The "secret" to success in fishing? Time on the water, attention to detail and information. Find a body of water that's close-by and you like and learn it inside and out. The more time you spend on your "home water" the more success you're likely to have. Talk to others about the fishery and gain their insight and tips. Be mindful of the details like line weight, hook size, weight, depth you're fishing, water temp., etc. Support your local tackle shop and they'll support you with timely and accurate information. And finally, enjoy your time on the water...it's what makes fishing the wonderful pastime it is!

Sharing the fishing legacy is one of the best things we can do as anglers to enhance fishing opportunity. Angling licenses fund the management mission, hatchery production, conservation efforts, outreach and the long list of other tools necessary to assuring fishing around the United States. If you haven't already, please check out the "Angler's Legacy" on this website and take the pledge to introduce someone new to the sport. It's the single most effective and meaningful thing you can do (other than buying a license yourself) for the future of fishing. Thanks so much for your participation in Take Me Fishing.org and Fishington. As a part of this community you're making a statement for better fishing, better fishing conservation, habitat restoration and preservation and proper management of our fish resources. Well done! Good fishing!

Be mindful if you're fishing in the heat to stay well-hydrated, use plenty of sunscreen and be mindful of over exertion. Heat stroke is a real threat these days in most parts of the country and a serious sunburn can ruin a vacation and cause permanent skin damage. Take a few extra precautions if you're fishing during the heat of the day. As always...good fishing.

John Williams raises an excellent question..."what are the best hot spots for trout, smallmouth and largemouth bass in his area?" You won't have to look long or far if you live in Pennsylvania or most of the states across the country to answer this question. Check out your fish and wildlife agency's website. In the case of Pennsylvania it's their Fish and Boat Commission. Here you'll find loads of useful information to help guide your efforts. In the case of PA their website has a "hotspots" area that can be queried by species - here's the link: http://fishandboat.com/hotspots.htm These fish and game agencies are the experts, they're in the field daily, year around and know where the action is. Serious enthusiasts develop relationships with their local fish biologists who freely share where and when fishing is best in specific areas. Also, there are several excellent publications, some of them produced weekly, that will give you the information you're looking for. Finally, stop by your local tackle shop and get to know them...they are excellent conduits of information. Good luck, good fishing and thanks for your question John!

Water safety is everyone's job. Do what you can to educate others to stay safe when they're on or near the water. Wearing a personal floatation device (PFD) is the single best thing you can do to assure your safety on the water. It's essential gear for children and anyone who boats.

In the world of fishing, knots are the essential connection. Tie one poorly and you'll surely pay a difficult and frustrating price. The debate about which knots are best and why is a regular and ongoing source of conversation...which is good as anglers constantly review and refine their practices. For sure, you'll be well-served wetting your knots before tightening them. There's complete agreement on that detail. Cinching down a knot without wetting it can create heat which will compromise the integrity of monofilament lines. Want more info? Here's a short tutorial on how to tie the "five strongest knots"...good info...http://bit.ly/ju92RM

Are carp the next "big thing" for U.S. fishing? With $100,000 tournies, renewed interest and more and more anglers rediscovering this fish, it's a timely question. No doubt, carp fight hard and grow big. Two important attributes for any angler. Is it their looks that hold most anglers back? Interesting question. Here's an article worth checking out --- your comments are always appreciated --- http://bit.ly/mDXHyy

The question has been asked more times than anyone knows --- if you only had one lure to choose, what would it be? Depending on where you are and what you fish for the answer will reflect your regional species preferences, experience, individual preferences, etc. Well...here's an article that comes right out and says it..."The World's Greatest Lure"...do you think they got it right? bit.ly/jtNV0E .

Here's an interesting technique...it's called, "Sploosh Ball Fishing". It's used in rivers or areas with moving water and has wide applicability to fisheries other than trout, steelhead and salmon. You'll fish more effectively because this method prevents snags. Check it out and see what you think: http://bit.ly/iVAlsv

One thing you'll find in the United States is plenty of top-flight fishing and boating opportunities. One of the country's leading fishing and outdoor publications made their picks for 2011...did your favorite make the list? http://bit.ly/jJ3TmX If not, what would you add to this list? Looks like some pretty awesome fishing on tap from coast-to-coast this summer.

Every weekend can be a wonderful and exciting new adventure...wherever you live and whatever you enjoy fishing for. Love to see what your plans are for the coming months. .
