JPolston, re Hawaii Wait until you get out there -- you may not need to buy a boat. MWR may have boats or do fishing trips, or you may be able to connect with folks using other parts of this community. The best fishing is likely to be offshore stuff, but wait and see.

The Arabian Gulf (Okay, A.K.A. the Persian Gulf) near Bahrain is brown water, mostly pretty shallow. There's mackerel and grouper (the orange spotted G. is known locally as hamour) and sharks. I'd have loved to fish the mouth of the gulf off Oman, and into the Indian Ocean.

It's been MANY years since I fished around San Diego. Gulf of California, down in Mexico, has some good fishing, and you can always go offshore from SD.

The Med is pretty overfished. I was dismayed when a cruiseboat captain told me one time that a foot-long mackerel I'd caught was "a really big one." Definitely catch-and-release waters.

My favorite place is Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Never mind brown-water fishing, give me that clear blue Caribbean. Ain't nothin' better than watching the predator come up to see if your trolled bait is gonna be his breakfast, then see him swerve off and come in to hit it-- Surprise! There was a hook in that bait fish!

When stationed in 29 palms we use to go to Black Meadows Landing on Lake Havasu in Arizona to fish. Nice area. Check it out. Lots of fun.
