This past weekend, my son’s Cub Scout Pack #304 held our Family Camp at Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden. Along to assist/mentor the younger boys were four Boy Scouts from two local Troops #304/#180. On Saturday, the Cubs earned their Fishing Beltloop with help from the older Boy Scouts. The boys rigged simple bamboo poles with nylon filament lines, attached barb-less hooks, and baited the hooks to catch/release those fish they caught. Waokele Pond is catch/release with limited fishing times, so as soon as the boys arrived at the shore, the fish were clammering for the boys’ hooks! In all, the Cub Scouts and their Mentors caught a whopping 134 fish, including Banded Jewel Cichlid, Tilapia, Bass, Midas Cichlid, and Black Chin Tilapia. I’m proud to say my son caught the largest fish, an 11-1/2” Bass. He was VERY excited—said it was the best part of the whole weekend for him! Thanks, TakeMeFishing, for sponsoring the Scout Patch Program. It not only ties into the values of Scouting, but encourages the boys to try new activities. Our boys are looking forward to receiving their First Catch Patches and adding them to their vests/collections.

We took our troop of 15 boys and 11 leaders fishing at the Lineville City Park on Feb. 18th. Unfortunately, the lake had not been restocked in years so we only caught one fish in several hours. The troop decided to relocated to the scoutmaster's pond and ended up catching about 5 or 6 more fish before the day of fishing was over. I have found the form to get the First Catch Patch, but I am having trouble finding where to go to get the Mentoring Patch for the older scouts and the Passport Patch. Please advise.

We hope everyone is taking their Boy Scout Troops fishing this summer! Don't forget about our Scouting Patch Program. Find out more here: http://www.takemefishing.org/community/scouting/home (We don't have a similar program for Girl Scouts yet, but it's possible in the future!)

If you have kids in grades K-5, let them know about our Explore the Blue Essay Contest - if they submit an essay about their fav. boating or fishing trip, they could win a trip to Yellowstone! http://www.exploretheblue.com/

Our 7 year old Wolf Cub participated in a Children's Fishing Tournament at York River State Park today. He fished for 2 hours! It's never held his interest more than 10 minutes but the competitiveness of it held his attention. We used your site to find the park, discuss what we needed to take with us and what types of fish he might catch. While enjoying the safety talk and fishing he completed all of his fishing elective requirements for this year and several towards his fishing pin. I can't wait for our pack to work towards your patch programs over the next year. Thank you for supporting my son and cub scouts everywhere!

We had a Council lead fishing Derby in May and we'll will be doing a Pack fishing/camping trip this month. I created a Cub Scout Fishing Guide using the resources on this website and added a bit more info to include everything a scout would need to earn not only a belt loop but a pin as well. I will bring taking this guide along on the fishing trip to share with all the scouts.
