Ok well, before the weather turned warm BASS.com suggested things to do this year and one of those suggestions was to keep a fishing log, and like I a lot of things I said I was going to do that and then when metal met the road, I never did.. until now. I've got some retrospective I need to go back too, but at least I'm making an effort. So BASS.com here you go hope you're happy I'm taking your suggestion.
So let me start with yesterday, Friday April 13th. Yeah, I went fishing on Friday the 13th. I started out at what I'll call the main road pond. One that I drive by everyday, but I never fished because it wasn't as close as other ponds that I could walk to in the community. But I've been carrying two rods with me in my truck for the past two weeks since I was off work for Spring Break. So I left work early Friday and instead of going straight home I pulled off driving through the neighborhood and threw a few lines in the water to get rid of the week. I started out there with a 3/8 blue jig with a new Berkley Havoc Slop Craw (red). Yeah I know not a real good combo together. I didn't actually buy the plastic, but they were given to me and I already had the jig tied on so I just made due with what I had. I had that tied on to my 6'6" Rhino rod that I've got a Quantum Escalade baitcaster on. The other was a shakey head with a Zoom Trick worm in bubble gum on my Quantum 7" spinning outfit.
Let me stop there and back up one more step and explain where I primarily fish. I live in a conglomeration of housing additions that are all merged together to form one large community. But this large community is surrounded by fields on all but the one side. So it's not a congested suburb. Most of the time with work, family, and other obligations I only have time to fish the retention ponds throughout the neighborhood and nearby at some of the churches in the area. Basically where ever there is a little pond that is holding fish, usually largemouth or bluegill, I'll throw a line in. The problem I learned the hard way and what I realized some people still haven't come to understand is these retentions ponds need time to mature before they can be fished. It took me a few failed attempts fishing the primary pond in my community to realize that other ponds in the community that were in the older parts of the neighborhood were more established and more mature, which meant that instead of maybe a 5" largemouth or 20 bluegill. You're more apt to get a 12" to 14" largemouth and a couple nice bull bluegills.
So back to Friday, started off the main road pond into the neighborhood. Throwing the jig and shakey head. I was slow hopping both from the middle of the pond or swimming the jig with a twitchy retrieve. The wind was out of the south temp was high 60's and the pressure was dropping because there was a storm coming in by midnight,
Then on the north end of that pond, in the shallows one blew up the surface. So I headed over and started casting for there, especially letting the shaky head sit in the area where the one had jumped. Nothing bit, so I ran up to my truck to change to my baits out because what I had wasn't working.
I cut the shaky head and went to one of my tried and trues I have the most confident in, 1/0 circle hook wacky worm with 4" Yum dingers in watermelon with chartreuse tails on my spinning outfit, and on my baitcaster I switched the jig out for a Rapala X-Rap sub walk. Instead of going back down to the community main road pond, I headed over to one m favorite ponds in the neighborhood. I had a lot of success and fun there last year catching probably close to 20 bass in there.
Normally I'm on the outside of the pond by the county road, but since I was in my truck I just parked on the street and fished on the inside of the neighborhood. The best spot that I hardly ever fish in this pond is in the south west corner is bull rush and cat tails.
In early spring I like to fish the dead bull rush because I use the dead as cover when fishing from the shore like a duck blind.
No luck on the sub walk, but I was happy my wacky worm produced. Darn thing was I didn't even know it was took. I threw it out there, and I guess at this point I should stipulate that the spinner is lined with 20lb Berkley Pro Braid. I threw and on a spot I felt a bite, but they just hit the tail and let go. So I kept working that spot,. Finally I got a hit, at first it was so light I thought I was just hung on weeds but I kept consistent pressure on and turned out to be a little 8" or so. Not bad. Truthfully I wasn't really paying all that attention, I was actually sitting down, which I hardly do when I'm fishing. But this was more about relaxing, detoxing from work, and just enjoying myself.... and listening to the bleeding red-wing blackbirds barking in my hear with that high pitched squeak.
Oh well, it's all good. Well so far we had an early spring, which I think most of the country did and March was real warm. I've been to the ponds a few times this year, but only caught a few so far. BigIndianaBass is saying that the spawn is turning on in the reservoirs up north at Geist and Morse.
Tomorrow's weather looks say as today with chances of heavy rain and storms at time so probably won't get out tomorrow anyways, so try and make more updates retro back to my other excursions I've had this year so far.
Until then.
