Pymatuning was once know as a lake where you could catch 100 walleye a day with 99 of them being just under the the lake's 15 inch size limit. That is no longer the case. With the introduction of the non native Cisco bait fish a few years back, the walleye population has dwindled. Cisco eat walleye fry. This gives a much better chance at catching larger fish but you really have to know the lake to find them.
On the bright side, the muskie population has increased. Once decimated by "red fin" disease the muskie population has returned enough to make Pymatuning a viable fishery for them again.
Largemouth and smallmouth fishing can be outstanding but again, knowing the lake really helps.
Crappie and blugill numbers have remained strong with a shot at some real trophy class fish here. On a recent trip to Pymatuning with a buddy we drifted a sandbar in hopes of catching some walleye. After catching a few perch and small bass I hooked something big enough for me to ask my buddy to get the net. After a short fight the fish surfaced and it turned out to be a blugill that measured 11 inches long.
Perch on Pymatuning tend to run on the small side but lately you can catch enough of them to weed through the little ones and end up with a pretty nice meal. There are also some nice channel cats and white bass to be caught.
For those not faniliar, Pymatuning is a large reservoir located on the Ohio Pennsylvania boarder. You must have the proper state's license to fish from shore in that state. You can carry either an OH. or PA. license while fishing from a boat or ice fishing. There are tons of facilities including camping, swimming beaches, boat ramps, etc... There are HP restrictions in place.
