Robert Hillaker is proud to be a part of the Anglers’ Legacy.
Who got me involved in fishing:
My Uncle John took me fishing with his 3 sons. We went catfish, Black Bass and trout fishing. Also every summer we would go to Westport, CA above Fort Bragg, CA where we went Rock and surf fishing. I caught a 15 lb. capazone.
Favorite Fishing Story:
Every year after I got married my wife and would take my mother in-law steelhead fishing at the Klamath in California by Orleans or North Umpqua up by Glide Oregon. We alway went so her Birthday would be October 2nd during the time we would be fishing. She always caught a fish on her birthday though one time at the Klamath she had one heck of a time, she was using roe with 12 lb. test it was getting late and no fish I told her to use her daughters rig with 6 lb. test and a fly and bubble, she finally used it and caught her fish, the first time on a fly and bubble and the last time on roe. On our Oregon trips we never hooked a steelhead while she was alive. The year after I was fishing in the North Umpqua at Steamboat, was catching rainbows on a Pink Lady but no steelhead. On the way back to Roseburg I saw an angler loading a large steelhead in his truck, I stopped and asked him abouth it, he suggested I fish a riffle about one mile below the bridge I crossed where he was at, he also suggested I use an Elk Hair October Caddis or Black Rubber leg fly size 6. He stated I could get them at the Ideyld store where I immediate went. The next morning I was fishing below the riffle on a rock 3 feet into the river, I casted for 3 hours with no luck, I then noticed after I casted that at a certain point my line would slow down and the tip of the rod would start to bend. Well I stated to myself the next time that happend I was going to set the hook to see if it ws a fish, the next cast the line started to slow down again the rod tip started to bend, I set the hook and 45 minutes latter I landed a 11 1/2 pound steelhead, I then took a 10 minute brake to settle my heart beat down, then threw a couple more cast and landed a 8 pounder. They were both hatchery steelhead and one barbecued and one smoked that evening, they were sure delicous. When I was walking out of the canyon I yelled to the sky that both of these steelhead were for you Aileen my mother in-law. Was sorry that she would never catch a steelhead in the Umpqua with me, but I bet she is fishing there anytime she can with a smile on her face catching and releasing all the steelhead she can. The picture for my profile is the 11 1/2 and 8 pound steelhead I caught.
