My Anglers’ Legacy

somefishinfool is proud to be a part of the Anglers’ Legacy.
Who got me involved in fishing:
My Dad, taught me how to fish. I also had a big brother( Mike) who would take me & my younger brother(Shawn), camping, fishing & hunting. One of my dad's favorite sayings, was
" Give a man a fish & feed him for the day. But, TEACH a man to fish,& feed him for the rest of his LIFE!Favorite Fishing Story:
Here's the story that won me a boat!
The Carp & Gar Attack of 2009
Team “KO” (Kevin & Orlando) launched Orlando's new canoe, for a shake down cruise at Candies Creek, TN. Locals call it “STUMP WORLD” with good reason. Our objective was to catch a few crappie in the rising spring water.
Weather conditions were perfect. 70 & sunshine with a slight breeze. Initially, we had a ROCKY start, we nearly dumped it a couple of times. ( it had been awhile since our last canoe trip )
After some adjustments & discussion on safety, we headed up stream. At the first stop, where 2 streams came together, we stopped & drifted in.
WHAM! WHAM! FISH ON! We doubled up on a couple nice crappie. As we sat & fished, we kept hearing splashes & thrashing, just up the creek. Curiosity, got the better part of us, even though the fish were biting THERE!
We eased around the corner with the stealth of a cat on the prowl (”ELITENESS”) LOL!, to witness the water, BOILING with fish!
Pandemonium & Mayhem soon followed, as we drifted over the top of hundreds of GINORMOUS! I mean HUMONGOUS, carp, breeching the water like freshwater Whales! Some of these things were 60 or 70 lbs! I whispered to Orlando " I think we're going to get MORE than what we bargained for.
" Just then, one of the whales (I mean carp) RAMMED our canoe!! The shock wave rippled through the canoe, as we nearly flipped it,from the impact and scare from the size of the fish.!
I blurted out." AWE!, Capitan, we're under ATTACK!, full speed ahead. I'll bypass the dilithium crystals and give her all she's got!!" Like Scotty from Star Trek. As I dug the paddle in the water. Orlando busted up, & nearly fell out of the canoe, as he dodged an incoming fish! Laughing & paddling, we headed for a safe port & devised a “TOP SECRET” plan of attack. We rigged up for our encounter. We let the wind, slowly drift us across the top of copulating carp. NOT A BITE! But, as we got closer to a weed line, we saw FINS sticking up. We were giddy with anticipation. The water was no more than 8” deep & you could see HUNDREDS fish CARP & GAR laying eggs in the murky mud.
As we neared the fins, we casted to the weed line.... WHAM!,WHAM!, FISH ON!! We BOTH hooked up to monster gar that were mating in the same area. As we engaged the fish in a mighty battle. It spooked all the surrounding fish. That's when the real fun started!! It was quite the sight!
We both had huge gar on & the water was again BOILING, with fish!! Some almost jumped in the canoe! I leaned back & FELL off my seat into the floor of the canoe, STILL holding on to my rod for dear life. Mud & water was flying everywhere!!. Orlando was crying with laughter. I looked UP at him, and said " HOLY COW! What have we started?" He laughed even harder as tears ran down his face. He steadied the canoe, by sticking the paddle in the mud & holding it tight. All the while, battling a PO'd LONG NOSED GAR! When I finally regained my “ELITE” angling self. ,& got back in my seat, we finally landed them & took a couple photos.(they have some snarly teeth) Muddy , Bloody & WET!, from head to toe ! (index finger wounded in “hand to fin” combat) We left the frenzied fish, to finish their mating dance. We watched them from a safe distance, across the creek, and discussed our days battle with the Breeding BEAST!, We caught some crappie & I nursed my wound from the encounter. I'd say it was a DRAW.
All in it was ANOTHER great day on the water. Tight Lines & FISH ON!Best Fishing Joke:
"The CALLED fish". We were sitting on our deck which overlooked the lake we lived on at the time.(Chickamaga, Tn)Some children from down the street, were at our house for burgers and dogs on the grill. The whole time we, cooking and eating, a large bass was schooling minnows on the edge of a boat wreck just off the bank, right in view of our deck.( Man I hated to move from there!) I told the kids at one point " I'm going down there to catch that bass right after dinner". Of course they said " No Way ". Well it was on. When ever I saw the bass busting the top chasing minnows, I'd call them over to the porch rail and say " LOOK HOW BIG it is! I told them that it was the bass having dinner too, and I was going to go down there and give him dessert" I always kept a rod tied with a Smithwich's Devil's Horse. Nothing like bustin top water. I had an old Ambassadour 5500 that was my dad's I was using at the time.(retired in my collection) After dinner the kids watched from the deck as I walked down the bank and onto our dock. Calling " HERE FISHY, FISHY! " The water was calm with just a slight breeze as the sun was setting.(Like A Moive) I paused there with the kids yelling at me from their lofty perch on the deck, " WHERE"S YOUR FISHY NOW!" I looked at the boat wreck and saw a slight swirl. I gazed up at them and said " She's right about(as I was casting) THERE! It was like slow motion... the lure fling thru the air and landing just off the right of the swirl. The ripples of the cast had started to gently widen....WHAM!! the bass hit the devil's horse like a ton of bricks. In my minds eye I saw a great white breeching the water on a little seal. The line tighted and I woke up and realized I had a huge bass. It tried to take me in some close by tree. It must of jumped 5 or 6 times, a foot or two each time. In the background I could hear the kids" HE'S GOT IT", as the scurried down the hill. With a some what played out fisherman & fish, I finally lipped him at the edge of the dock. The ensuing photo op. "They helped me catch it too" Daughter Janelle on my right, she's 23 now, I think they may remember it for awhile. I know I will
