U.S. Army Corps of Engineers: No outflow from Hartwell Lake through end of year

ANDERSON COUNTY — According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers - Savannah District, Hartwell Lake will see no more outflow of water through the end of the year.
Corps spokesman Billy Birdwell said Wednesday recent rains have ensured downstream needs are being met by Lake Thurmond and its tributaries.
As a result, no outflows from Hartwell Lake are scheduled between now and Jan. 2, Birdwell said.
“The extra rain Lake Thurmond received means we can pull the downstream needs from Thurmond until it is back in balance with Hartwell in terms of the conservation pool,” Birdwell said.
He also said water continues to flow into Hartwell Lake as the result of a small outflow from Lake Keowee and as well as rain run-off received from minor upstream tributaries.
Birdwell could not comment on whether the halt in the outflow would be extended beyond Jan. 2.
Mike Gray, co-chairman of the Hartwell Lake Chamber and Municipal Coalition, called the zero-flow “unprecedented” in terms of giving relief to lake levels.
“Everyone involved with the lake owes a debt of thanks to Col. (Edward) Kertis (commander, Savannah District) with the Corps for reducing the outflow, at least for the time being,” Gray said Wednesday. “We don’t always agree with the Corps, but we do acknowledge the work they do and job they have.”
The news regarding the outflow reduction was well received following Tuesday’s announcement that Col. Kertis signed an agreement with the Strom Thurmond Institute of Government and Public Affairs Clemson University to study the economic impact of Hartwell Lake’s water levels.
“I think everyone is going to be shocked at the impact of the lake for the area, regardless of the lake levels,” Gray said.
