Restoring native fish species and enhancing habitat for prized Atlantic salmon are two of the ways Maine is working to protect and recover fragile fish stocks. Relying on a variety of partners, they're succeeding in their objective to increase wild fish stocks in the state.

Restoration of Arctic Char and Eastern Brook Trout at Big Reed Pond
Sometimes you have to start from scratch and that's exactly what the state of Maine did in removing native species and holding the mat a nearby fish farm and then eliminating the invasive fish species at Big Reed Pond. A complex and challenging project, wild eastern brook and arctic char (the only population in the lower 48 states) are being reintroduced back into Big Reed Pond.

The Machias River
With 86 percent of the Atlantic salmon habitat within the Machias River, system restoration efforts were essential to assuring future runs and protecting the native eastern brook trout population. To allow fish to pass and provide for a natural stream channel, by the end of 2010 the majority of the single-rod stream crossings in the West Branch Machias River sub-watershed will have open-bottom arched culverts installed.
