Deep Sea Fishing Wildwood NJ: What You Can Catch

If you are an offshore fishing fan, you may want to plan a trip to go deep sea fishing in Wildwood, NJ during the summer or fall months. Consider going on a Wildwood deep sea fishing adventure by booking a trip on a charter boat. There are plenty of New Jersey fishing charters in Cape May County that can take you out near the deep canyon trenches for big game fish.

Do you want to know what time of year and where to fish in New Jersey for offshore species? If so, check out this summary of what you can catch and the best time of year to go:

Yellowfin Tuna

You'll notice that when charter captains put out a Wildwood NJ fishing report, the months of May and June are typically prime time for yellowfin tuna around Wilmington Canyon. Many yellowfin are caught while trolling live ballyhoo around the canyon edges.

Bluefin Tuna

From May through the month of October, big bluefin tuna are a popular offshore target and can be caught while either trolling or jigging. If you search for "deep sea fishing NJ," you can find a list of Wildwood-based boats that can help you catch a bucket list bluefin tuna.

Wahoo

While this species can be somewhat elusive in New Jersey offshore waters, there are still opportunities to catch a wahoo if you time your trip right. July and August typically offer you the best chance. It's not uncommon for Wildwood deep sea fishing captains to hook up with wahoo while on the troll for yellowfin tuna.

Marlin

Both white and blue marlin can be found in New Jersey offshore ocean waters during summer and early fall. The best months are typically June, July and August.

Swordfish

The night swordfish bite can be good from July through October. Most charter boats run 24 to 48 hour trips in order to get out to the best spots, and then fish throughout the night in roughly 600 to 1200 feet of water.

Now that you know what you might have the opportunity to catch while deep sea fishing in Wildwood, NJ, be sure to check the state fishing regulations. While New Jersey doesn't have a saltwater fishing license, they do require recreational anglers to register with the NJ Saltwater Recreational Registry Program.
