Take Mom Fishing

Mother’s Day is almost here so many will be thinking about flower bouquets or blooming plants. In fact, the National Public Garden Day is always set for the Friday before Mother’s Day. But have you ever thought of taking “Mom” fishing?

Laura Starkey Heflin has fished on Mother’s Day.  She happens to be a professional bass tournament angler. However, not all their time together has been about fishing. She recalls fondly when her son, Jesse, was in grade school and wanted to go on fishing trips. However once he caught a single fish, he put down his pole and was more interested in opening his tackle “store” on the boat with his parents encouraged to buy new bait from his tackle box.

Laura and her son now fish together in tournaments. Last year, Jesse won the state championship in Kansas and qualified to fish the regional tournament in Louisiana.

But a mom certainly does not have to be a professional angler to enjoy a fishing trip. Sherry Lindon Ramsey and her daughter have recently learned to fish in Oklahoma, and now even go three or four times a week during the summer. Any fish, any size is fun for her daughter, but Sherri just enjoys them being outside together, even if she reads instead.

Fishing may not be for everyone… but there is always hope. Maybe Mom just has not had the right opportunity. Maybe she would enjoy a pleasant dinner cruise around the lake.  And maybe, while you are cruising, you could even be trolling with a couple of rods.  And maybe if a rod gets a hit, you could put it in her hands and see what happens…

Then again, some flowers as a backup might not hurt.
