Uni Knot

The uni knot is a fishing knot that can be used for attaching line to your reel. It is an easy, multipurpose knot.

Uni Fishing Knot

One of the most versatile fishing knots you can learn is the uni knot, which is also known as the uni or Duncan knot. This knot is easy to tie, has multiple uses, and can retain up to 90% of its original breaking strength.

Keep in mind that the uni knot is different from the uni noose knot, which is a boating knot that can be used to secure an eyelet on a rope without splicing it. The uni noose knot is not a fishing line knot, whereas the uni knot (also known as the uni knot or Duncan knot) is a fishing line knot.

Uses for the Uni Knot

One of the advantages of knowing how to tie a uni or uni knot is that it can be used with monofilament, fluorocarbon, and braided fishing lines. In addition, this knot can be used for different purposes.

  • Use to attach fishing line to the arbor of your reel.
  • Use when attaching hooks, lures, or swivels to your leader or tippet.
  • Use for joining two lines together. When this knot is used to join two lines it is referred to as a double uni knot.

If you are learning how to fish, the uni or uni knot is a good knot to practice because it can be used in each of these situations.

How to Tie a Uni Knot

Now that you know when to use a uni or uni knot, follow these steps to tie it.

  1. Pass your line through the eye of the hook and make a loop with the tag end.
  2. Wrap the tag end around the doubled line and through the loop 5 or 6 times.
  3. Bring the tag end out of the loop and pull to tighten.
  4. Finish by pulling the standing end to slide the knot down to the hook, lure, or swivel.
  5. Trim the tag end.

After going through these steps a few times, you will find that the uni knot (also referred to as the Duncan knot or uni knot) is one of the most practical fishing knots you can learn.
