RBFF is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to increase participation in recreational angling and boating, thereby protecting and restoring the nation’s aquatic natural resources.
As we look to grow fishing and boating participation, RBFF spends a lot of time, energy and budget on creating angler and boater “newbies.” But who should we be targeting to convert?
This year’s ICAST show saw a surge in attendance, and a wave of new and growing events geared towards engaging women in fishing.
From 2011 to 2021, fishing participation increased by more than 6 million people according to the 2022 Special Report on Fishing, and more than one-third of those new participants were youth between the ages of 6 and 17. As adults with children are much more likely to go fishing than their childless peers (21% to 13%), children truly bolster participation in recreational fishing. Here’s how fishing has changed among youths over the last decade (2021 to 2011).
RBFF leverages partnerships to extend the reach of its Take Me Fishing campaign, and in its’ third year working with West Marine, it rallied around two key research insights to increase participation. Fishing is the #1 activity done on a boat. Women start fishing at a very high rate, but also drop out at a high rate because they don’t see themselves in the sport.
RBFF kicked off the summer celebrating the 20th anniversary of National Fishing and Boating Week back in June. Throughout the week, NFBW public relations and media outreach initiatives achieved great awareness across national and local media outlets, and on social media.
