Bass Fishing in Houston: 5 Area Hot Spots

Houston, we do not have a problem when it comes to bass fishing. If there is one thing Texas freshwater anglers love, it's bass fishing in Houston. You can launch your boat at the site of the recent Bassmaster Classic or take your family to Sheldon Lake State Park and spend the day bass fishing from the shore. Whether you're a boater or a bank angler, there are plenty of Houston fishing hot spots for all skill levels and abilities.

Lake Conroe


Of all the fishing spots in Houston, Lake Conroe may be one of the most famous since professional bass anglers traveled from near and far to fish on this lake during the 2017 Bassmaster Classic. If you are after a trophy fish, visit Lake Conroe in late winter or early spring for your best chance. The standing lake record largemouth bass was caught in January of 2009 by angler Ricky Bearden and it weighed 15.93 pounds.

Lake Livingston


If you travel just an hour north of Houston, you'll find another one of the Lake Livingston has good numbers of striped bass in addition to largemouth bass. If you want to try trolling a silver spoon behind your boat for a striper, you can pay a visit to this area hot spot.

McGovern Lake


One of the popular hot spots for urban bass fishing in Houston is the 7-acre McGovern Lake at Hermann Park. Although, you'll need to note that fishing is permitted for children under 12 years and seniors over 65. This particular Houston fishing spot is reserved only the youngest and eldest of bass anglers.

Tom Bass Park


You can drive about 13 miles from downtown Houston to wet a line in Tom Bass Park Lake. While plenty of anglers land largemouth bass from the shoreline of Tom Bass Park Lake, the lake is also stocked with catfish and rainbow trout. This is another one of the hot urban fishing spots in Houston, particularly for families.

Sheldon Lake State Park
